Frequently asked Questions

Q:
How much will it cost me to get my logs turned into lumber?

A: It depends on the size and cleanliness of the logs, type of sawing, and thickness of the lumber produced. Small logs (<10" diameter on the small end), dirty logs, grade sawing, quarter sawing, and thin lumber (<1/2") all require us to charge by the hour. The cost is $47.50/hr. We use the hour meter on the mill to determine this cost. Normal sawing of average logs we charge $.25/board foot for lumber >1/2" to 1-1/4" thick. For lumber greater than 1-1/4 thickness the price drops to $.23/board foot.

Q: What is a board foot?

A: A board foot (bf) is a volume of lumber that is equal to 12" x 12" x 1" thick. For example a 1" thick x 6" wide x 8' long would be 4 board feet. I find it easy to figure board footage by using the following formula: thickness of board in inches x width of board in inches x length of board in feet / 12. A 1" x 8" x 10' = (1 x 8 x 10) /12 = 80/12 = 6.7 bf (board foot).

Q: I would like to figure the volume of lumber in my logs myself. Is there a formula that I can use?

A: We have found that the 1/4" International log scale is the most accurate for our sawmill. We typically can get 10% more volume than the 1/4" International scale but it gives us a good starting point for calculating the volume of lumber in a log. The formula is: .05(d-1)2 x L = bf. d is the diameter of the log on the small end inside the bark. L is the length of the log in feet. A log 16" diameter on the small end and 8' long would be: .05(16-1)2 x 8 = .05(15 x 15) x 8 = .05 x 225 x 8 = 90 board foot. If you add 10% the total is 99 board foot. That is what we would typically get out of log this size.

Q:
Should my logs be green or is better for them to be dry before milling them?

A:
The greener the better, but we can mill any logs with any moisture content. If they are extremely dry then we may have to charge by the hour instead of the board foot. This is because the cutting rate is much slower with dry wood.

Q: Do you charge mileage?

A: If it is a small job (less than 500 board feet) and less than 50 miles then we charge $50.00 to bring the mill over and set it up. More than 500 board foot and 50 miles or less then there is no charge for mileage. Any job over 50 miles then we have to charge $1.00/mile over 50 miles, and small jobs we have to charge an additional $50.00. So if we saw 650 mbf for you and you are 75 miles away then your cost for traveling would be $25.00. If we only saw 400 mbf then the cost goes up to $75.00.

Q: Do you have any lumber for sale?

A: We usually have some lumber for sale. We currently have cherry, ash, and curly maple lumber available. Some of it is quartersawn. We try to keep a selection of wide natural edge planks for tabletops, shelves, etc. We also keep a few odd shaped pieces around for people looking for a unique project. E-mail us or give us a call to find out what we have available.
